SECRET CULTS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IMPLICATIONS FOR NATIONAL SECURITY

Abstract

The phenomenon of secret cults in our higher institutions of learning now poses a major threat to the security of Nigeria.

In the past, the higher institutions of learning were a safe haven for academic pursuit and research. In those days, academic freedom and movements in our campuses were uninhibited. But today, the situation has drastically changed whereby law abiding students as well as members of staff of such institutions can no longer freely move about in the campuses without being subjected to harassment, molestation and intimidation. In some cases, innocent students have not only been injured or maimed but had been killed by members of the secret cults.

Consequently, students in most higher institutions now live in fear of their lives. They now find it difficult to concentrate on their studies and their freedom of movement is now limited. Every one of us who are parents have apprehension that our children and wards could be victims of such attacks by members of the secret cults.

It is against the foregoing background that I have predicated my individual essay on the above problem with a view to proffering possible solutions bearing in mind that I am privileged to know much about the phenomenon in my official capacity.
