Delinquency is found in all nations, be it developed or developing country. Juvenile Delinquency is also a growing social malaise in Nigeria affecting a significant number of people in many undesirable ways. The younger groups of delinquents are made up of children of beggers, neglected children on the streets, and some children from broken homes. During the political campaigns in this country, young persons are usually used at campaign rallies as thugs of the political parties and contestants. These youths, more often than not, are armed with guns and dangerous weapons. In addition, they are treated to life of drugs and alcoholism. These youths end up being delinquents and school dropouts, partly because of absence of social security and job opportunities. These are the products of dreaded youths in the Niger Delta, the Area boys of Lagos, Bakasi Boys of Eastern States, Odua Peoples' Congress, (OPC), and the Almajiris of some northern cities among others. Some of these jobless youths have become prey to the manipulation of some selfish elements of our society. High percentage of the causes of juvenile delinquency have been attributed to the life style of parents, broken homes, parental neglect, failure to uphold our value system, poverty, over-sized families and effect of television and foreign films, among others. It is as a result of the above that this study looked indeptly at the topic: Juvenile Delinquency and the Social Effects. To carry out this study, both primary and secondary data were used extensively. The methodology adopted was the survey, questionnaire and oral interviews. These enhanced the possibility of collecting the data needed. Tables, simple percentages and absolute numbers are the tools used to analyse the data collected for the study. A lot of findings were made in the course of this research. Prominent among them were, that some of the social effects of juvenile delinquency include, youths becoming school drop-outs, bad image to most families and the nation, increase in crime commission, like abandoned babies and spread of HIV/Aids diseases. Based on the findings, recommendations were made by the researcher. Among them is that compulsory education for every child of school age should be made a cardinal objective of every government of this country. This will help to reduce the incidence of hawking and malingering among the juveniles that bring them into contact with criminals and massive education and awareness campaign on the evils of deviant behaviours. To carry out a successful research work, this study was divided into five chapters, and each of them is treated in the main study. Finally, it is hoped that having highlighted the causes and social effects of juvenile delinquency, the recommendations would be properly addressed to create set values for our children to become better leaders of tomorrow.enAfrican CultureOdua Peoples CongressMoral LaxityPromiscuityJuvenile Delinquency and Social EffectsThesis
